MADISON MURRAY
Madison Murray is a visual artist and animal behavior researcher in New York City, her art explores the life and behaviors of abiotic elements of New York that create connection and community such as music and transit systems. She explores themes of strength in femininity and agency in her work from self portraits to portraits of mythical women.
— This work explores femininity and agency. Growing up I watched my mother heavily critique her body, a trait which was passed on to me. When she underwent a double mastectomy from breast cancer as a result of her exposure on 9/11, she lamented the loss of her old body. Yet, still I critiqued myself despite seeing her experience. This work depicts the experience of drowning in feelings of body dysmorphia.
