//ART HOE ARCHIVE VOL. I

An archive is a power structure— a repository of information preserved for the future, imbued with latent intentions and ideas about truth. We asked artists to submit works to us that were a testament to their existence, a shout of “I was here.” If you gaze into the future, the future gazes back.

We came up with this idea to spotlight underground or under-the-radar artists in NYC in January of 2024. Now, we’ve curated a space featuring 30+ artists all sharing their unique stories. We wanted to freeze a moment in time, share space with a group of artists immersed in their creative flow, and embrace an energy we hope will inspire us moving forward. This is the Art Hoe Archive Vol. I.

It’s impossible to fully capture the present moment in all its glory. We make images, sounds, objects, and movements to hold onto the time that shapes us. While we’ll snap as many pics and make as much art as we can tonight, the true essence will live on in the minds and bodies of those who had the guts and drive to show up and be seen. These are the artists who believe in the power of personal memory, submitting works about the times that have brought them to this moment and will continue to stick in our memory for the future.

Art Hoes United started as a fun way to unite the creatives around us, and it turned into something both significant and expansive, thanks to the genuine support from a community that’s all about backing each other’s growth. This is about the healing power of art and that vibe that digs deep, whether it’s for dirt or for gold.

ARDINA

ardina is an amalgamation of everything that is breathing through her, and makes themselves known through crunchy basses, lacey kicks, and snares searching for the right places. with their archival of time, ardina is grappling with the discrepancies of realities. repeating sentences that stick like garum glaze are employed to guide their remembrance of being an angel. on a micro political level, they are trying to root deeper into relational dreams and operate from the freedom and joy that is present, following Ebonyjanice Moore’s and Thea Monyeé teachings. After an unintentional music hiatus in their puberty and in adoration of silence, ardina feels drawn to loud sounds and distinct artists when engaging in aural stimulation; M.I.A., Deuén, Nusar3000, SOPHIE, and BAMBII, are those who move them. Collaboration with Charli, Arca, and Twigs is what they move towards.

In portraying joyous and loving queer, trans, femme relationships, Leta Selmanović and ardina try to counter fascist structures of generality. ardina, in line with Massumi's thinking (Politics of affect, 2012), sees identity as a result of power and as a particular selection of memories. To be a girl is ultimately a celebration of ardina's girlhood and an acknowledgement for them ultimately in the relating, not the particular identity, celebratory resistance can abide.

FREEDOMFAIRY

The Freedom Fairy was born and raised in Los Angeles, California, but has brought the sunshine to New York City where she is currently based. She’s a young Indigenous American woman making ballet accessible to all walks of life through performing in public parks and sides of streets conveying a wide range of emotions to create connection and support with the community. Her style is not strictly ballet, though that is her main form of training and study. She bends the technique of ballet to suit the emotional expressions of the music she dances to. She performs for a freak pop artist Ångel004 as a backup dancer in Ångel’s Fleet in New York City and Los Angeles and takes class at Steps On Broadway, Broadway Dance Center and Peridance. Michelle has certifications in the Royal Academy Of Dance, Progressing Ballet Technique and has a bachelor’s of arts degree from University of California, Riverside. The conventions of ballet and modern dance are too restrictive and removed from society at large, that’s why Michelle brings her intuitive version of dance to the streets of NYC and LA 3-5 times a week where you can see your story unfold in her performances.

Alice Muratore, born in Milan in 2002, is a visual artist using photography, video, installation, and performance art. Her work explores the deep connection between the human body and nature, life and death, and the eternal cycle of existence. She investigates the blurred boundaries between creation and destruction, seeking a universal connection beyond time and space.

In the place where every form of life originated, the artist investigates the relationship between permanence and impermanence, staticity and flow, intangibility and materiality, death and life. Through gestures, movements and body positions, the concept of transformation and metamorphosis of existence is explored. While the rock seems to remain immutable, the human figure moves taking on different shapes, following the rhythm of the waves and of the wind.
