MARIO TAUCHI

Mario Tauchi, known as Mario Mandala, is a Japanese artist in Tokyo. His work, influenced by tribal, religious, street, and psychedelic art, began in 2001. He has exhibited globally as a performance artist, collaborating with musicians and poets. He led a mural project for the 2012 Keith Haring Exhibition and has showcased in galleries worldwide.

—The core of my work is to translate organic shapes of nature into a symbolic visual language that directly alludes to the fusion among Asian metaphysical cosmology of mandalas, Western-originated modern/contemporary art, including abstract expressionism, and multiplex forms of tribal art. This visual language is one example of an experiment to create a resonating structure beyond the boundaries of different traditions, cultures, ethnicities, and religions. Assuming all things in the universe are inevitably interrelated, achieving a better coexistence within this limited environment arises. It is much needed to show how we can live free from self-inflicted violations and destructive interventions. Creativity is what contributes to humanity by expanding tolerance.
